The Gender Pay Gap: Can We Engineer Solutions?

Monday 14 November, 2011

Time: 5:30pm refreshments for 6:00pm start (1 hour presentation)

Location: Telstra Conference Centre, Room 1, Level 1, 242 Exhibition Street, Melbourne

There is a perception that the gender pay gap between women and men is a thing of the past. Yet the gender pay gap remains stubbornly persistent. Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that the average gender pay gap is 17.2%. To close this gap, women would have to work an extra 63 days over a year to match what men earn. It has been estimated over the next 40 years the average 25 year old male will earn approximately $2.4 million compared to $1.5 million for the average female. In this session Mairi will unpack the gender pay gap by discussing the following:

• What is the gender pay gap and what causes it?

• Why should employers care?

• What can be done about it?

There is no admission fee and all are welcome; however registration is encouraged for catering purposes. This talk is hosted by the IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity group and the IEEE Australia Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT).

Mairi Steele is Manager of the Women's Branch in the Federal Office for Women which is part of the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Aairs (FaHCSIA). She has been involved in gender equality and workplace relations for nearly thirty years, both as an academic and a public servant.
